How to Kill the Dragon Quickly

Intermediate8 min read

Complete guide to fast Ender Dragon kills using bed explosions. Covers one cycle, zero cycle, positioning, and health management during the fight.

Overview

The dragon fight is the final split in any run that requires killing the Ender Dragon. A fast dragon kill can save 1 to 3 minutes compared to the traditional method of destroying all end crystals first. Modern speedrunning uses bed explosions to deal massive damage during the dragon's perching phase, skipping crystals entirely.

There are three main approaches to the dragon fight, listed from easiest to hardest: multi-perch bed bombing, one cycle, and zero cycle. Each requires progressively tighter timing but finishes the fight faster.

Preparation

Before entering The End, ensure you have:

  • 7 to 10 beds in your hotbar (sequential slots for fast switching)
  • Food (bread, cooked meat, or golden apples) for healing between explosions
  • Blocks (cobblestone or obsidian) for building an explosion shield
  • Armor (at least iron chestplate) to reduce explosion damage

Arrange your hotbar so beds are in slots 5 through 9 (or similar grouping) and food is in slot 4. You need to switch between placing beds and eating food rapidly during the fight.

Multi-Perch Bed Bombing (Beginner Method)

This is the most forgiving method. You do not need perfect timing or positioning. The idea is simple: wait for the dragon to perch on the fountain, place beds near it, and detonate them. If the dragon survives, wait for it to perch again and continue.

When you enter The End, sprint to the bedrock fountain in the center of the island. Position yourself near the fountain but not on top of it. Wait for the dragon to complete its initial flight pattern and begin its first perch.

Once the dragon is on the fountain, place a bed on top of the bedrock and right-click to detonate. The explosion deals up to 100 damage to the dragon (it has 200 health). Place and detonate beds rapidly. 5 to 7 beds will kill the dragon across one or two perching cycles.

Between detonations, eat food to restore your health. Bed explosions deal 25 to 50 damage to you depending on distance. Having a block between you and the bed reduces your damage significantly.

One Cycle (Intermediate Method)

One cycle aims to kill the dragon during its first full perching cycle. The difference from multi-perch is that you need to deal all 200 damage points during a single perch, which requires faster bed placement and better positioning.

Sprint to the fountain immediately upon entering The End. Position yourself on the side of the fountain opposite to where the dragon is approaching from. You need to read the dragon's flight path to determine which side to stand on.

When the dragon begins its descent to perch, start placing beds on the fountain. Detonate each bed as soon as it is placed. The key is speed: you need to place and detonate 5 to 7 beds within the 5 to 8 seconds the dragon is perching.

Use a block shield between yourself and the bed placement spot. Stand one block back from where you place the bed, with a cobblestone block at chest height between you and the detonation point. This reduces self-damage from roughly 40 to roughly 15 per explosion.

If the dragon survives with a sliver of health, hit it with a sword or wait for a second perch. Having extra beds as insurance is critical.

Zero Cycle (Advanced Method)

Zero cycle kills the dragon during its very first approach to the fountain, before it fully perches. This is the fastest method (the fight lasts under 15 seconds) but requires precise timing and excellent positioning.

The dragon's first approach to the fountain happens during its initial scripted flight. After the spawning animation, the dragon flies in a wide arc and then descends toward the fountain. Zero cycle catches it during this first descent.

You need to be at the fountain, ready with beds, before the dragon arrives. Sprint directly to the fountain from the spawn platform. Place your first bed just as the dragon begins its descent. Detonate it when the dragon's head is within explosion range.

The timing window is extremely tight: you have roughly 1 to 2 seconds to place and detonate the first bed. If the first bed connects, rapidly place and detonate the remaining beds. Four to five well-timed explosions during the initial approach kill the dragon outright.

Zero cycle has a high failure rate even for experienced runners. The dragon's approach angle varies slightly each time, making consistent zero cycles difficult. Many competitive runners opt for one cycle as a more reliable alternative that is only 5 to 10 seconds slower.

Positioning Details

Where you stand relative to the fountain matters enormously. Stand at the base of the fountain, not on top of it. The bed should be placed on the top layer of the bedrock fountain (Y level of the top block).

Your position relative to the dragon determines whether the explosion hits. Beds explode in a sphere, but the dragon's hitbox is largest around its head and body. Place beds where the dragon's body will be, not where its tail extends.

If you stand too far from the bed, you cannot detonate it. If you stand too close, the explosion may kill you before you can eat food. The ideal distance is 1 to 2 blocks from the bed placement point, with a block shield between you and the bed.

Health Management

Surviving bed explosions is as important as dealing damage to the dragon. Each explosion hits you for 25 to 50 damage without armor, or 15 to 30 with iron armor and a block shield.

Your health strategy depends on your available resources:

  • Bread: Heals 5 health. Eat between every 2 to 3 explosions. Carry at least 16.
  • Cooked meat: Heals 8 health. More efficient than bread but harder to obtain quickly.
  • Golden apples: Heals 4 health plus gives Absorption (extra hearts). The best option if available.

End crystals on the obsidian pillars heal the dragon between your explosions if you take too long. In one cycle and zero cycle attempts, you detonate beds fast enough that crystal healing is negligible. In multi-perch attempts, crystals can undo your progress if the fight drags on.

Practice Method

Create a creative world, enter The End, switch to survival mode, and practice bed placement on the fountain. Repeat until you can consistently kill the dragon in one cycle. Then work on zero cycle timing. PeepoPractice provides dedicated dragon fight practice scenarios that skip straight to The End with the correct inventory.
