Tower Strategy

Beginner1.0+

Also known as: Nether Tower, Towering, Height Strategy

Build a tower in the Nether to get above the terrain and visually scan for structures like bastions and fortresses. Higher vantage points dramatically increase your render distance effectiveness.

How It Works

The Nether's terrain is filled with walls, ceilings, and obstructions that block your line of sight. By building a tower of blocks upward (typically to Y=100 or above), you rise above most terrain features and can see structures at the edge of your render distance.

Nether fortresses and bastion remnants are large structures that are visible from considerable distance once you have line of sight. A tower of 30 to 50 blocks is usually sufficient to clear the terrain and spot structures up to 10 chunks away.

This is a simple technique but highly effective, especially in biomes like the nether wastes where terrain is relatively flat but still obstructive at ground level.

Step-by-Step Execution

1

Gather 40 to 64 blocks of cobblestone, netherrack, or any solid block.

2

Find a relatively open area in the Nether.

3

Look straight down and jump-place blocks beneath you to build a tower upward.

4

Continue towering until you clear the nether ceiling (around Y=90 to Y=120).

5

Look around in all directions for fortress bridges or bastion structures.

6

If you spot a structure, note its direction and approximate distance.

7

Descend safely (place water if in overworld, or carefully pillar down in nether).

8

Travel toward the spotted structure at ground level.

Tips

  • +Bring extra blocks in case you need to tower at multiple locations
  • +Increase your render distance before towering for maximum visibility
  • +Look for the distinctive dark coloring of fortress bridges and the blackstone of bastions
  • +You can tower from the nether roof (Y=127) for an even better view in some versions

Common Mistakes

  • -Not bringing enough blocks and getting stuck at an insufficient height
  • -Falling from the tower and dying (always descend carefully or have blocks to pillar down)
  • -Towering in a basalt delta where visibility is poor regardless of height
  • -Confusing netherrack formations with actual structures in the distance
