Water Bucket MLG

Medium1.0+

Also known as: MLG Water, Bucket Save, Clutch Water, Boat MLG

Place a water bucket at the last possible moment before hitting the ground to negate fall damage. This is a critical survival technique used throughout speedruns to save time by jumping from heights instead of building down safely.

How It Works

When you place a water bucket on the ground, it creates a water source block. If you land in this water, even if it is only one block deep, your fall damage is completely negated. The timing requires placing the water just before you land, typically within 1 to 3 game ticks of impact.

The technique is called MLG because of its origins in competitive gaming clips. In speedrunning, it saves significant time because you can jump off cliffs, stronghold staircases, or end island edges instead of slowly descending.

Boat MLG is a variation where you place a boat instead of water. The boat absorbs fall damage when you land on it, and works in the Nether where water cannot be placed.

Step-by-Step Execution

1

Hold a water bucket in your hand (or assign it to a consistent hotbar slot).

2

Jump or fall from the height you need to descend.

3

While falling, look straight down at the ground below you.

4

Just before impact (within 1 to 3 ticks), right-click to place the water.

5

You will land in the water source and take zero fall damage.

6

Immediately pick the water back up by right-clicking the source block.

7

For boat MLG: place a boat below you before impact and right-click to enter it on landing.

Tips

  • +Practice in a creative world by building a tower and repeatedly MLGing from different heights
  • +Always carry a water bucket in a consistent hotbar slot so you can switch to it instantly
  • +The timing is easier from higher falls because you have more time to react and aim
  • +In 1.13+ versions, waterlogged blocks can work as an alternative landing spot

Common Mistakes

  • -Placing the water too early (it flows away from your landing spot) or too late (you hit the ground first)
  • -Not looking straight down, causing the water to place on a wall instead of the ground
  • -Forgetting to pick the water back up, leaving you without a bucket for future saves
  • -Attempting water bucket MLG in the Nether where water instantly evaporates
