Use a village to collect iron, food and beds on the way to the Nether. The weaponsmith chest is the one to find, since it can hold iron ingots, diamonds and obsidian, and hay bales take care of food. Nothing here needs a technique you have to practice first, which makes it the most beginner-friendly Nether entry.

When to Use

When a village is close to spawn. Villages generate in plains, meadow, desert, savanna, taiga and snowy plains biomes, and one with a weaponsmith is worth the detour.

Find the village

Look for houses around spawn in plains, meadow, desert, savanna, taiga or snowy plains. Job site blocks give the useful houses away: a grindstone for the weaponsmith, a smithing table for the toolsmith and a blast furnace for the armorer.

Loot chests

The weaponsmith chest rolls 3 to 8 stacks from a list that includes iron ingots, diamonds, gold ingots, 3 to 7 obsidian, iron tools and iron armor. The toolsmith chest can hold iron ingots, diamonds, an iron pickaxe and an iron shovel, and the armorer chest iron ingots and an iron helmet. Cartographer chests only have maps, paper, a compass, bread, sticks or a bundle, so skip them.

Gather hay bales

Breaking a hay bale only gives you the bale back. Put it in a crafting grid instead: one bale makes 9 wheat and 3 wheat make a loaf of bread, so every bale is worth 3 bread.

Collect beds

Beds explode when you try to sleep in them in the Nether or the End. They cost far less than TNT or end crystals, and the ender dragon takes damage from explosions, which is why runners carry several into the fight.

Build portal

Three iron ingots make a bucket, and one bucket is enough to cast the frame from lava and water. If the chests gave you 10 obsidian, you can build a frame without corners straight away.
